Sri Lanka Association for Animal Nutrition (SLAAN), 

A scientifically driven national authority in animal nutrition, the Sri Lanka Association for Animal Nutrition (SLAAN) serves as a multidisciplinary platform that integrates research, academia, and industry expertise to advance animal nutrition science, enhance livestock productivity, and strengthen national protein security. 

By promoting evidence-based feeding systems, precision nutrition strategies, and standardized best practices, SLAAN translates scientific knowledge into practical, cost-effective solutions that improve efficiency and sustainability across the livestock sector. 

Through technical guidance, professional training, research collaboration, and policy engagement, the association supports the development of resilient, high-performing production systems while ensuring environmental responsibility. Positioned at the interface of science and application, SLAAN plays a critical role in driving innovation, building national capacity, and securing a sustainable supply of high-quality animal-derived nutrition for Sri Lanka’s growing population

Mission 

To advance the science and practice of animal nutrition across all animal sectors by promoting research, innovation, and knowledge exchange; strengthening professional capacity; supporting industry development; informing policy; and fostering sustainable, efficient, and environmentally responsible nutrition systems.

Objectives

General objective

To advance the science, education, and ethical application of of animal nutrition for ruminants, swine, poultry, fish, companion animals and laboratory animals in Sri Lanka, thereby contributing to sustainable animal productivity, food safety and security, animal welfare, and environmental protection, in accordance with national development goals. 

Specific objectives

  1. To promote and advance research in animal nutrition relevant to Sri Lankan conditions by fostering collaboration among academia, research institutions, and industry.
  2. To strengthen the capacity of all stakeholders involved in animal nutrition including professionals, academics, students, and extension officers through continuing professional development programmes.
  3. To promote efficient and cost-effective feeding practices by encouraging the use of local and alternative feed resources, improving feed quality and safety, and addressing practical nutrition challenges of animal species referred to in the general objective.
  4. To provide technical expertise to government and private sector institutions on animal nutrition and feed resources, and to contribute to national policies that support livestock development, feed quality and security, and climate-resilient sustainable food systems.
  5. To promote environmentally sustainable feeding systems by advancing research and practices that improve nutrient utilization, reduce environmental pollution, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and promote circular use of feed resources through enhanced nutritional strategies.
  6. To strengthen linkages with regional and international animal nutrition associations, and to promote collaboration through exchange programmes, joint research, technical cooperation, and representation of Sri Lanka in international forums related to animal nutrition.
  7. To disseminate knowledge on animal nutrition to stakeholders, promoting awareness of feed safety, quality assurance, animal welfare, and the quality and value of animal products through a range of platforms and activities, including scientific conferences, training programs, webinars, and publications.
